How Memory Works


The human brain is an amazing organ, capable of storing vast amounts of information and allowing us to access it at a moment’s notice.


But how exactly does memory work? How does the brain take in information, store it, and retrieve it when needed?   Let's explore the fascinating science of memory.


Memory is made up of three stages:

  • encoding,
  • storage, and
  • retrieval.


During the encoding stage, the brain takes in new information by actively processing it. This could be through hearing, seeing, or feeling something. The brain then organizes the information according to its importance and relevance.


Once the information has been encoded, it is stored in the brain in networks of neurons that form neural pathways. This process is known as consolidation, and it helps make memories more accessible in the future.


When we need to recall a memory, the brain begins the retrieval process. It activates neural pathways associated with the memory, which triggers a cascade of electrical impulses that causes neurons to fire in patterns similar to when the memory was first encoded.

According to sleep expert Dr. Robert Stickgold, "When we first form memories, they're in a very raw and fragile form." Getting enough sleep is essential to strengthening and linking those memories. In addition, restoring sleep might improve memory in older people. As Dr. Stickgold advises, "Realize that the sleep you get the night after you study is at least as important as the sleep you get the night before you study. When it comes to sleep and memory, you get very little benefit from cutting corners."



2. Exercise regularly

Exercising regularly is one of the most important ways to improve your memory. Exercise not only increases blood flow to the brain, but it can also stimulate the production of new neurons, which can help improve recall.
